Im Rahmen der 60. Internationalen Filmfestspiele Berlin wird der weltweit bedeutendste Queer Film Award im Rahmen eines A-Filmfestivals (Internationale Filmfestspiele Berlin | Berlinale) auf einer festlichen Galaveranstaltung mit anschließender Party verliehen. Erstmalig finden die Gala und die anschließende Party nur einen Steinwurf entfernt vom Potsdamer Platz in der STATION BERLIN – dem ehemaligen Paketpostbahnhof am Berliner Gleisdreieck statt.
Eine besondere HOMMAGE widmet der 24. TEDDY AWARD dem 1996 verstorbenen Sänger, Komponisten, Texter und Schauspieler RIO REISER, zu dessen 60. Geburtstag. Rio Reiser war der erste deutsche Sänger, der sich öffentlich als schwul geoutet hat. Zusammen mit seiner Band „Ton Steine Scherben“ schuf er nicht nur den Soundtrack der 68er- Generation sondern auch den Soundtrack der beginnenden deutschen Schwulenbewegung, als er gemeinsam mit den Theatergruppen „Brühwarm“ und „Transplantis“ und den „Ton Steine Scherben“ in den 1970er Jahren die ersten schwulen Musicals produzierte und auf die deutschen Bühnen brachte. 1977 bekam Rio Reiser für seine erste Filmrolle in dem Film „Johnny West“ den Bundesfilmpreis in Gold.
Anlässlich der Hommage an Rio Reiser wird die Band „TON STEINE SCHERBEN“ bei der TEDDY AWARD Gala erstmals seit dem Tod ihres Frontmanns wieder in Originalbesetzung auf der Bühne stehen. Zudem greift das Motto des 24. TEDDY AWARD einen Song von Rio Reiser/Ton Steine Scherben auf: MEIN NAME IST MENSCH.
